Sunday Assembly: Home

Posted:

Creative Space Management welcomes Sunday Assembly to their new home at The Core, Science Central. It’s fitting that the theme of the first gathering here is ‘Home’.

The speakers are Hannabiell Sanders and Yilis del Carmen Suriel, award-winning musicians from New York and New Jersey who have made Newcastle their home. They will talk about how they came to be living in the North East, why they have stayed and how they are forging successful careers here.

Hannabiell & Yilis are well known as the Afro-Latin percussion and brass duo, The Ladies of Midnight Blue. They have performed all over the world for festivals, charity benefits, peace rallies and protest marches. Their powerful and upbeat music inspires dancing and calls for audience participation. For the last 7 years, the duo have worked as workshop facilitators and guest artists. Their art and music workshops focus on community building and raising awareness concerning inequality on all levels. And they’re bringing the drums so everyone can have a go! In the spotlight this month in “X Is Doing Their Best” will be Shah Amin, founding member of North East Solidarity with Calais Refugees, who spurred hundreds of people to donate, sort and transport huge amounts of donations to the refugee camps in Calais. Shah has recently returned from his mission to the camps, and will tell us the stories of those driven from their homes and desperate to find new ones.

There’ll be some fantastic sing-a-long songs for you this month, including one you won’t believe you know all the way through!

As usual there’ll be laughs, life hacks, community, chat and all the good stuff you’ve come to expect, and we’ll round off with our customary pay-as-you-feel coffeeshop and the chance to make new friends. Cake donations very welcome as always. You’ll leave feeling energised, connected and happier.

FREE Entry – Doors open 11.30am, event starts promptly at midday till about 1pm. It’s followed by cake, chat and kids’ storywriting club till around 1.30pm.

If you can, please bring foodbank donations of non-perishable foods or hygiene items (toilet roll, tampons, toothpaste etc) or donations of clothing, blankets, sleeping bags etc.

WHAT IS SUNDAY ASSEMBLY?

Sunday Assembly Newcastle is a budding community of diverse but like-minded people who want to make the most of this one life we know we have.

We are a secular and radically inclusive community. Everyone is welcome, and although we don’t do religion we won’t tell you you’re wrong if you do.

We get together the last Sunday in the month at The Core at Science Central to enjoy a mix of presentations, performances and talks on culture, science and the arts. It’s relaxed, fun, free and interesting. There’s music and singing, creative stuff for kids, tea, coffee and homemade cakes!

We are also working on a number of social and community action groups to connect people and do some good without god.

Sunday Assembly Newcastle is volunteer run. We’re always looking for speakers, performers, musicians, poets, bakers, photographers, bloggers, fundraisers, technicians, administrators, promoters, designers – you name it!

To volunteer email us at: newcastle@sundayassembly.com – that would be great!
