ISIS ARTS LAUNCH ‘CORNERS’ AT THE CORE

Posted:

We are delighted to have ISIS Arts host the launch of their new 3 year arts exchange project, CORNERS, here at The Core.

Clymene Christoforou, ISIS Arts Founder and Co-Director said, “ISIS Arts is very happy to be launching Corners, our major new European project at The Core in Newcastle.  Corners connects our corner of England with corners of Europe, drawing threads between people and places and sharing stories about our environments, communities and aspirations. As our close neighbours, with a shared philosophy, I can think of no better place than The Core for our live transnational launch”

The project will bring 55 artists from 11 different countries together to create 12 new commissions inspired by communities across Europe. Working with two areas in the North East (Middlesbrough and South East Northumberland), these communities will connect with corners in Italy, the Basque Country, Croatia, Serbia, Sweden, Poland, Slovenia, Kosovo, Northern Ireland and Sweden.

ISIS Arts’ partners in the North East are mima in Middlesbrough, and bait in South East Northumberland. Communities from these areas will host the artists from Europe, sharing their creativity to inspire the arts commissions.

Alistair Hudson, Director of mima said “Corners is a very important project that connects mima and Middlesbrough to places and people around Europe that face similar issues in a time of dramatically shifting regional and national politics.”

The project has attracted major funding from the European Commission and is one of only 21 Large Scale project grants awarded in the last round. In the UK it has been supported by the Arts Council of England and project partners.

CORNERS is the most significant project for ISIS Arts, who have run international programmes of commissions, residencies and events for over 24 years.

At the invitation only launch event, guests will meet local partners and artists involved, take part in a live weblink with their Croatian partners and enjoy refreshments with a CORNERS flavour.
